There will be no terrorist attacks under a government I lead

JULIA Gillard will ask Australians to remain calm and offer reassurance if terrorists attack Australian soil.

According to a draft address prepared by national security, the Prime Minister will tell the nation: "I ask the people of Australia at this time to remain calm.

"We should not allow terrorism to impact upon the way of life we value so highly.

"I wish to reassure Australians that all of Australia's governments, police forces, emergency services, security and intelligence agencies are doing all they can to prevent further attacks and help those who have been affected.

"Safeguarding the community from further terrorist attack is the Australian government's highest priority."

Fairfax papers report that the draft statement has been rehearsed in national counter-terrorism exercises.

The statement's key messages include public reassurance, educating the community about Australia's preparedness to respond to terrorist attacks and praising first responders and recovery workers.

Security guidelines seen by Fairfax papers urge security and police agencies to co-operate with journalists because "how an incident is reported by domestic and international mass media outlets and how journalists themselves judge the actions of government agencies will shape public confidence and influence views on whether the incident is successfully resolved".

The guidelines state that journalists should be encouraged to get their information from government spokespeople rather than "ill-informed" academics or unofficial terrorism experts.

They also highlight "the dangers of live coverage of eyewitness accounts, which may create fear and alarm".

A media blackout would be imposed "only in extreme circumstances".

Read the comments, and I agree, this government is a joke.

A bad one.

Labor hasn't lost it's way, it's lost it's bloody mind. :read

I tink the solution is obvious.

...

JULIA Gillard should be dressed in a gimp suit and put into a box.

She should be pulled out whenever Labor need a good rogering.

I expect she will not be in the box very often.

The more I read the sadder I feel for Aus.

When is the next election due? (not soon enough)

Well, Labor did predict a change of climate and extreme weather conditions, perhaps they were referring to their own radical government?

Gillards lost the plot, come to think of it, one cant lose what they never had to begin with.

And will the coalition be briefed on this matter of national security, or will they like the rest of us, read about it first in one of Fairfaxes dumpy rags over a bowl of cornflakes?

- Possible media blackouts
- Police told to cooperate with Journalists. (Fairfax ?)
- Journalists told to report information received from government officials only.
- Journalists not to report on information sourced from academics, eyewitnesses, or otherwise non-gov officials and or even independent intelligence experts.
- No independent media to scrutinise or critically evaluate the official line.
- No live footage/ flash photography.

Thats ok, I bought an iPhone and we all know they don't support flash.

Tell me, what do you suppose the rational is for alerting our nation to their intention to advise us of a situation that has not even occurred before the fact?

Wishful thinking?

And already, they have made it water tight, this and advised of the possibility of a media black-out so we march to the beat of their communist drum.

This is a government on it's last legs, desperately grappling for power racing the clock.

It all sounds like common sense stuff, unless you're a conspiracy theorist nutbag like Mellie. Governments need to have contingency plans for worst case scenarios... it's what we pay them for.

Like a plan B for a failed border protection policy?

Indeed? Onshore processing is not part of the govts platform ergo is is not a 'plan B'

Having a plan B means actually having the plan.
Not capitulating to someone elses plan

The majority of Australians all bar asylum shoppers and Greens, want to stop the boats, this and don't take to kindly to terrorist alarmists/threats.
