Statehood for NT
Last time it was attempted the people voted no because the pollies were trying to use the process to cement their positions in power. Looks like the same process has started again.
As far as I'm aware there's been no public consultation and no local release of an agenda yet media are reporting that the NT Govt is in Canberra canvassing support for statehood. I suspect it'll be change of govt at next election.

Re: Northern Statetory
What are the benefits for the NT is they become as state?
What are the benefoits for the rest of us?
Does this mean they have to stand on their own and not rely so much on Federal government support and funding?

Re: Northern Statetory
It will make the Senate even more unrepresentative of the people.

None, and you don't get a say in it either.

I don't really care but I wondered what the impact on the rest of us would be.Neferti~ wrote:I feel compelled to reply.TomB wrote:Super Nova wrote:What are the benefoits for the rest of us?

Is a concern. It will make the Senate even more unrepresentative of the people.
Is the senate proportional representation?

The NT and ACT have lesser "votes" and can be over-ridden by the Commonwealth Government. So "Self Government" is a crock of shit.

Re: Northern Statetory
Sort of. Within each state it is, but there are only six senators elected each cycle so you can get 15% of the vote and still not get a seat. The Greens were in this situation for a long time before they broke through in most states. Is the senate proportional representation?
Once you consider that each state has vastly different populations, it is not proportional representation nationally. Those in smaller states get a much bigger say in federal government.
