It was shocking - I thought that the trees would all fall down.

Imagine. Removing a city's prime 'natural' character of trees in streets n' all - just because some people have branches fall on their cars or claim that 'everyone' will be hit on the head by a falling branch... because they 'all' will be outside in the rain and high winds to cop a binklebonk on the head.
Some people just can't cope with a 'natural' world.
Maybe they want Sydney built out of MineCraft and other Cyber constructions? Real world stuff eh.

I agree about the need for councils to plant the right sort of trees on the footpath. It's unbelievable some of the trees that were planted underneath telegraph lines. So what they are doing is lopping the top and side branches which makes the tree become unstable. This is when you are likely to get a branch fall or worse, the tree uprooted. Some of those trees have been lopped in such a way that they look absolutely hideous. Some are leaning so far to the side you wonder how they are still standing erect.
In the streets near me we have huge Morton Bay figs. These trees are massive with huge root systems. But these trees were planted long before people had electricity. Other streets have Norfolk Island pines. It's a wonder we don't have problems. But we never experience power outages. I can't even remember the last one - if it ever happens once in a blue moon, it only lasts a few minutes at that.
