You have failed to tell us what 'IT,' is.
Given that it's in the thread title I didn't feel a need to have to repeat it on every post. I forgot I was dealing with idiots. It is MATHEMATICS, the topic of this thread.
Nom De Plume wrote: ↑Fri Apr 01, 2022 11:51 am
And, how do you know that 'IT' exists?
Experience. Before you could work out the angle of a triangle did triangles have angles or not? Or do you think that just because you hadn't discovered how to work out the angle yet, it was a straight line and only magically turned into a triangle when you started trigonometry??

Age old question.
What do you think?
Is mathematics invented or discovered?
A bit of both. Why?

To my mind, mathematics is the exploration and investigation of all possible patterns. As such, it is a discovery process that uses rationalism as its primary tool.
I should also add that rationalism invents the symbols and language necessary to understanding mathematics.
So the answer to the question... Is mathematics invented or discovered?
It is both!
And you would be correct

Aussie why have you deleted my last post on this thread?

I have already said....I don't care about ad hom attack/abuse, but, in the main Sections, that
must be accompanied by on topic content.

Both. We learned to count a long time ago in our infancy. Mathematics is just the formulas to come to quantified results.

Dude, you didn't display any understanding of the topic in question... you just assumed that you did because you did math at school. I was the only one that made an effort to think and then respond with my conclusion... something no one else was brave enough to do.

Experience. Before you could work out the angle of a triangle did triangles have angles or not? Or do you think that just because you hadn't discovered how to work out the angle yet, it was a straight line and only magically turned into a triangle when you started trigonometry??
And there you go again, assuming without thinking.... Straight lines don't exist! They are a mathematical invention!
And you DARE to claim that you are dealing with stupid's when it is YOU that is the stupid one!
I'll link you to a forum to a Physics forum which discuses this, but please don't join... you're no where near smart enough!

and yet it was you who had to ask what we were discussing

whether I did mathematics at school is irrelevant and all you are doing is highlighting your stupidity. Maths exist all around us and it always has. It doesn't matter if you or anyone else can explain how it works, it still exists. If it exists it is not an invention.
Next you'll be arguing that you invented gravity

bullshit. Straight lines exist all around us. You see them in tree trunks, flower stalks, spider web strands and a whole myriad of other natural occurrences. No one invented them.

I wasn't the one who asked what topic we were discussing in a thread titled 'Is mathematics invented or discovered?'

On the matter of lines, Smith wrote:bullshit. Straight lines exist all around us. You see them in tree trunks, flower stalks, spider web strands and a whole myriad of other natural occurrences. No one invented them.
None of those things you listed describe a line!

Quid est? An est? This is the conundrum that you have FAILED to address!

what conundrum? There is no conundrum. It exists, whether you understand it or not, it already exists, and has existed since the start of the big bang, so it cannot be an invention.
Next you'll be arguing that before Newton invented gravity. It matters not if Persius understood gravity, gravity existed whether the ancient Greeks understood it or not. Mathematics is the same. People coming up with explanations for mathematics are not inventing mathematics. The mathematics is already there. All they are doing is explaining it and trying to understand how it works.'
