Someone saw my gun in public for the first time in 10 years of carrying it. I was just Christmas shopping with my wife and getting out of the truck at a department store. An older man passed me and gave me a weird look. I realized that I forgot to pull my shirt over my gun as I left the truck. My wife said something funny to me about it. The man turned around and told me that he felt safer with me being armed when he saw me quickly covering gun. I didn't tell him that my wife was also armed.

Good on you Tex, we are not quite so liberated In New Zealand, But I did go out and buy myself another rifle last night, a Rossi Puma 44mag lever-action, Stainless steel on wood,

Those are beautiful. 16" or 20"? I've always wanted one in .357/.38.

Its a 16" , went for SS as I dont always clean my guns straight after using them , I considered the 357 but I just love the 44mag round

The stainless is gorgeous. I hope you got a lot of burl in the grain pattern. Keep it oiled to bring out the grain and protect the wood. Feel free to post pics.

I picked up the Rossi yesterday, there were some issues that needed resolving with the renewal of my licence, It claimed its first kill today, a ram that had a propensity for butting you up the ass, The round was an "American eagle 44 mag 240 gr hollow" a rather brutish round from a 16 inch barrel the ram was 105 kgs on the hoof, 57 kgs cleaned, that adds up to a big boy . the round totally shattered his head, My nephew cut the head in half length ways to inspect the damage

Dirty Harry, Hes my hero, next is Bruce Willis lol

This gun will be a great bush breaker, Its really switched me on to lever action rifles, I now intend to purchase a rifle around 270 to 300 for hunting, Something I can scope up, for medium game, red deer and elk,,

The great thing with deer in NZ, is there is no hunting season , any time you want to head out and shoot something , get a permit to hunt in an area ,and go for it , no restriction on what you shoot or how many ,

Unless you own large tracts of land, hunting is very expensive in Texas. The licensing and limits aren't expensive. Finding a place to hunt is where they get you. Most land is privately owned and hunting rights are sold by the land owners. There is some publicly owned land for hunting, but those places are crowded and not worth hunting. Usually, you have to pay for a "deer lease" for exclusive hunting rites for deer season. You will probably need to make several trips to the deer lease before deer season to set up automated deer feeders to attract the deer. You will also have to kill off the wild hogs or they will drive away the deer. If you take friends and family to the lease to hunt and you all get your limits, you are still almost paying more for your meat than just getting beef at the store.

If you own land, you still have to get a hunting license and limits apply, but you can manage the land and the hunting season cheaply and make out well. A friend of mine (my elementary school principal) has about 200 acres in East TX. He doesn't hunt, but he has the deer so tame that he can approach them. The deer in the state parks have become very tame because hunting is not allowed. My youngest son and I both were able to hand feed a wild deer graham crackers while her fawn stood a few feet away and watched.

My wife's cousin lives in Missouri and their hunting laws are very lax. Last time I visited him in the cold of Winter, he had 4 deer that he shot and strung up in the trees for storage until he had time to process them. He has a loft in his barn that overlooks a deer path and he sets up a little sniper's nest and waits. No feeding, no dear lease, and no overly restrictive limits.

Hogs are non native and considered nuissance animals. They can be shot on site with no license and with no limits. They frequently get to over 500 lbs and do billions in damage in Texas alone. My niece totalled her truck by running into one on a highway.

A little context on my new avatar. It's a picture of "Big Tex". He is a 17 meter tall animated cowboy and he is erected every year as the official mascot of the State Fair of Texas. He was originally a giant Santa Claus figure in Kerens TX in the 1950s and Big Tex for over 60 years since. His hand waves and his mouth moves when the announcer speaks through the loud speaker. His tag line is "Howdy folks. Welcome to the State Fair of Texas". He had electrical problems in 2012 and he burst into flames on the last weekend of the fair. They rebuilt and improved him for 2013 on.

All parents tell their kids that if they get separated to meet at Big Tex.
