Refugees should be selected from a refugee camp, they're the ones who need the help most.
Someone who can self fund flights can get fucked.

We give enough money in Overseas Aid to help these "war torn" areas where asylum seekers apparently want to escape from to move to Sydney and live on Welfare, etc. Join the Queue at home, wait your turn at the Refugee Camp. We have more than enough of home grown idiots who "can't get a job", we don't need to increase that lot.

What appears sensible to do you might not appear sensible to a person who is a refugee, who has just fled their home country because of war, Neferti. Particularly to a person who is subject to all the fears and axieties associated with that and the big promises made by people traffickers who intend to profit off of this situation. Then you have the problem - there are no Australian embassy officials in the camps any more and they haven't been there for over twenty years thanks to the aforementioned budget cuts under John Winston Howard in ~1997.

As for how much money Australia gives in aid, you have to be joking, right? Most of our aid money goes to Oceania, not Africa or the Middle East.

So? We are in Oceania, aren't we? Let Europe look after Africa and the ME.

And yet, where do most of the Asylum Seekers come from, Neferti? Oceania or the Middle East/Africa? So, what does that suggest about your claim that we are spending more than enough on foreign aid?

Also we should reduce Immigration, if there aren't "enough jobs" why import more people looking for them? Good for The Economy! Right, if they don't have a job and can't get one, how far does the Dole go to increase spending to keep The Economy running? Idiocy.

Immigration is a political football played with both the naive and the calculating, Neferti. There is evidence that immigration creates demand and with demand you get increased economic activity and hence a greater GDP. Against that, you have to worry about infrastructure and housing needs, plus water and so on, particularly in times of drought and in the future climate change. You didn't complain when Western Australia was having its Mining Boom and there were over 10,000 migrants a week (both internal and external) arriving there every week. Was it 'cause they were predominately white and there were jobs for them? What happens now there aren't jobs for them? Mmmm?

Are we are going down the gurgler? Interest Rates at what? House prices dropping (who cares mine is paid for), unemployment is still only 5%. I'm OK Jack!

We are not "going down the gurgler", Neferti. House prices are correcting - the were too high, now that the demand is being met, the prices for housing is decreasing. Interest rates and employment reflect the policies of the Tories - the Government you voted for and were so glad were elected. Well done, you've got the Government you wanted. EVERY kid is encouraged to "go to Uni" so we are spouting out kids with Degrees and no jobs. Back in the early 90s when I started chatting on The Net, I was talking to somebody in the USA and he said he had an Engineering Degree and when I asked where he worked, he said he was working as a Salesperson, selling SHOES! Only job he could get at that time and the USA does/did not have The Dole.

Well, the US does have unemployment insurance. Not as generous as Newstart Allowance in the time and the amount provided.

As for every kid going to University I can't actually see that happening with the way they are required to pay for their degree(s). There is an official discouragement for most people to go onto Tertiary studies, Neferti. This has been a fault of governments of all hues, unfortunately. IMHO Australia as a rich country should be able to provide free education to all citizens. The costs would be recouped through the higher taxes that education allows the recipient to pay.
