Ah, that would be old, pre-Howard way of doing it, hey, Gordon? Howard withdrew all the Immigration officials who had set up offices in the various Refugee camps in the Middle East. He did it, he claims as a "cost cutting measure" but he obviously didn't think that the refugees would be preyed upon by the people traffickers, now did he? When they came a calling he decided to victimise the real victims in all this, the Asylum Seekers who had been "loaned" (on generous terms of course by the people traffickers) the money to afford the people traffickers' services. They aren't "self-funded" in the slightest, Gordon. So, it seems we brought the Asylum Seekers to our doors by being parsimonious. Now, just imagine if Howard hadn't decided to cut everything of value out of the Immigration budget. You'd have your wish, Gordon. That'd be neat, now wouldn't it?

We give enough money in Overseas Aid to help these "war torn" areas where asylum seekers apparently want to escape from to move to Sydney and live on Welfare, etc. Join the Queue at home, wait your turn at the Refugee Camp. We have more than enough of home grown idiots who "can't get a job", we don't need to increase that lot.

Also we should reduce Immigration, if there aren't "enough jobs" why import more people looking for them? Good for The Economy! Right, if they don't have a job and can't get one, how far does the Dole go to increase spending to keep The Economy running? Idiocy.

What appears sensible to do you might not appear sensible to a person who is a refugee, who has just fled their home country because of war, Neferti. Then you have the problem - there are no Australian embassy officials in the camps any more and they haven't been there for over twenty years thanks to the aforementioned budget cuts under John Winston Howard in ~1997.

As for how much money Australia gives in aid, you have to be joking, right? Most of our aid money goes to Oceania, not Africa or the Middle East.

Against that, you have to worry about infrastructure and housing needs, plus water and so on, particularly in times of drought and in the future climate change. You didn't complain when Western Australia was having its Mining Boom and there were over 10,000 migrants a week (both internal and external) arriving there every week. Was it 'cause they were predominately white and there were jobs for them? What happens now there aren't jobs for them? Mmmm?

EVERY kid is encouraged to "go to Uni" so we are spouting out kids with Degrees and no jobs. Back in the early 90s when I started chatting on The Net, I was talking to somebody in the USA and he said he had an Engineering Degree and when I asked where he worked, he said he was working as a Salesperson, selling SHOES! Only job he could get at that time and the USA does/did not have The Dole.

If they leave school at Year 10 they are told they have to have a job as they don't get Newstart...hence
everyone is encouraged to stay at school until Year 12 as parents don't want to support their unemployed children...

Teenagers are then encouraged to go to Uni and guess what...they build up a HECS debt which is now payable
when they finish their degree, graduate and get a job worth over $45K...
