If one of a couple pays tax they both should be considered as paying tax.

Tax franchises and property franchises were abandoned because they were considered inherently unfair and disenfranchised the very people who should be concerned with the outcomes of elections - the poor and poverty stricken.
Tax and property franchises invariably favour the rich. They are unfair. In South Australia the property franchise was ended in the early 1960s by Steele Hall, despite knowing that it would mean the end of his government - which it did. I've always admired people like Steele Hall - they have the guts to follow through on their beliefs (and guess what? He was a Tory as well).

Whilst I agree with you to an extent, Brian, working people by and large are not “rich”. They are ordinary Australians living in the burbs trying to raise their families and keep a roof over their heads. And they have the shit taxed out of thembrian ross wrote: ↑Sat May 25, 2019 4:30 pmTax franchises and property franchises were abandoned because they were considered inherently unfair and disenfranchised the very people who should be concerned with the outcomes of elections - the poor and poverty stricken.

They have more right to the vote than someone who chooses to sponge off welfare.

I wonder which universe you live in sometimes, "Nicole". I've rarely met anyone who, out of choice, "sponges off of welfare". Welfare doesn't pay enough to live on, so I am unsure where you get the idea that people life the life of Riley on it.Mistress Nicole wrote: ↑Sat May 25, 2019 5:56 pmWhilst I agree with you to an extent, Brian, working people by and large are not “rich”. Middle income earners make up the bulk of the tax payer population. Yet, high income earners earn far more, per capita than the middle income earners and yet they are always, by the Tories, given tax breaks disproportionate to what they earn. Is that fair in your view?

That's an interesting comment Nicole, Im curious as to what qualifies as rich , im sure there will be variable opinions amongst the members here, At what income or net wealth do you become rich?

Trying to muddy the waters with "tax payer populations" vs those that actually pay the bulk of tax revenue.brian ross wrote: ↑Sun May 26, 2019 1:51 pmMiddle income earners make up the bulk of the tax payer population. Of course those that have paid more tax in both dollars and percentage of income get more back. The clue is in the name "tax break"
