18% man tax cafe charge

Post by Black Orchid » Sun Apr 28, 2019 4:38 pm

The Melbourne cafe that suggested an 18 per cent surcharge for male customers in an effort to address the gender pay gap is closing.

Handsome Her gained plenty of online notoriety in 2017 when it stipulated in its house rules that men would be charged an 18 per cent premium "to reflect the gender pay gap [2016] which is donated to a women's service".

Photos of the sign were shared on social media, where the cafe's business concept was vigorously debated.

The surcharge was optional and only applied during one in every four weeks.

Two years on, the cafe's owners have announced they will cease trading on April 28.

In a comment on Facebook, the administrators of the cafe's page said the reaction to the man tax "showed us how fragile masculinity is and solidified the necessity for us to confront and dismantle patriarchy".

The owners insisted the cafe is not closing because it has not made enough money, or because of "male tears or misogynistic vitriol from men's rights activists".

This is current day feminism for you. Charge men 18% more than women then blame men when they can't keep their doors open :b

Interesting. When I lived in Canberra in the late 1980s, Tilley's a feminist cafe stipulated that you need every male to be accompanied by at least two females for him to be admitted. Rather annoying but acceptable, considering that the Canberra Club refused to allow females to join at all... What's your opinion on that, Black Orchid? Are women allowed to join social clubs like the Canberra Club?

I have no idea about clubs in Canberra but I believe that men are just as entitled to have men only clubs as women are to have women only clubs ... and women have many.

I would have given Tilleys a wide berth myself as I don't find that acceptable at all.

Current day feminists try to emaciate men in the western world yet they are happy for women to be abused and violated in the third world. They are a stain on the original suffragettes.

Really? I can't think of one myself but I wouldn't doubt that some exist.

As it was a Lesbian cafe as well, Black Orchid, I'd have been rather surprised to find you frequenting it at all, what with your known homophobia...

I think you mean "emasculate" - in other words demale them, whereas "emaciate" means to starve, Black Orchid.

I also believe you're being a bit stereotypical there, as well, but hey, that isn't unusual for you, now is it? I know a few feminists who are concerned about women everywhere, Black Orchid. Time you got out of your basement, I think...

I know what emasculate and emaciate mean Brian and, yes, I typed the wrong thing. I DID mean emasculate but I have a really bad head today and feel quite sick and I wasn't thinking straight so thank you for pointing my accidental error out to me.

As for the rest, and because I do have a really bad head today ... blow it out your ass :thumb

I’m not in the slightest homophobic, but do wonder why so many lesbians hate men, and then spend their lives trying to dress and act like them?

An ex work colleague (fem lesbian) told me her partner was so butch she got stared at when using female public toilets. I could never understand why my work colleague didn’t just date a man, rather than woman who looks like a man

Don’t geddit.

One doesn't justify the other. We are seriously going backwards with this "equality" shit.

Also... can somebody explain to me how BO is homophobic? She's always been respectful to me.

As for man hating butch lesbians. I don't get it either. Secret penis envy, perhaps? I used to want to be a boy when I was a kid and often got along with boys more than other girls. Can't say I'm a "man hater". People are people, I'm just attracted to females instead of males.

It’s just Brian’s need to vilify and label anyone vaguely right wing. He does it so often, Black Orchid probably didn’t notice.
