I remember being appalled that my American email friends considered Australia was "like America was in the 1950s". They had never been here and it made me angry. However, now I tend to understand what they were saying ... Australia was a SAFE place to live, even in Sydney and Melbourne you could go for an evening walk around the neighbourhood and feel safe. Sydney could soon face severe water restrictions, with dam levels rapidly lowering and no rain in sight.

Overall water storage has fallen to 54.3 per cent.

Warragamba dam is at 55.6 per cent.

Water restrictions come into force when water storage levels drop to 50 per cent.

NSW Water Minister Melinda Pavey says the falls in water levels "are in excess of what we saw in the millennium drought" but the state is prepared.

"We've had the biggest fall at Warragamba Dam in the past 18 months than we've ever had," Pavey told reporters on Wednesday.
