It is how members of Parliament are selected, Cods. Preferences ensure that the person who wins the seat represents the majority viewpoint of electors. You call them "minorities". I call them majorities because that is what they are. If they can garner sufficient votes from the other parties in Parliament, that is called democracy. If you have problems with this or other concepts, just ask and I will explain them for you, Cods. Obviously you didn't learn them as a child, being a Pom - where such concepts are alien. No secret ballot, only a first-past-the-post voting system, well, what else can you expect?
DONT WORRY NEF i UNDERSTAND IT i ALSO UNDERSTAND IT WAS AN IDEA WHEN WE HAD A SMALL POPULATION.....

WHEN SOMEONE GETS IN WITH 19 VOTES....AFTER PREFERENCES..

YES I HAVE A BLOODY PROBLEM WITH THAT
Senate Voting is by necessity, more complicated than House Voting, Cods. It was chosen because of state wide electorates (except in Queensland where allowance was made for up to three electorates to be created - guess who did that? Joh, the greatest Tory of them all - crooked like them all, just 1000% worse.) It uses a modified Hare-Clarke system - which I note is an American system. Blame the Yanks for that one, hey?

Roberts got in with 19 votes. An unusual situation but one caused by the type of election he stood in - a full Senate, rather than a half Senate election.

Oh, and BTW, you know perhaps the most notorious Tory to get in on preferences, Cods? Have a guess and guess who's preferences they were.

Has someone told the rtards it applies to only those on Alcatraz yet? Boat turn backs still stay the same, unless of course faux mo and his team of drongos let them through, then they obviously aren't in control of our borders, like they weren't when that boat drove up through the front door in QLD recently

People smugglers will always seek to test the resolve of a country.

They, along with everyone else, understand that left has none.
