The guy is a dead man walking, even though he does understand that the Libs cannot be the only major party which will not address the climate change issue.

Politics 101, you never split your party on an issue that opposition wants and needs.

Turnbull could have just as easily said “I care about climate change but we need to wait until Copenhagen to see what the big boys commit to as none of them are going with pre-passed legislative commitments.”

This is not only true and prudent (who goes to a negotiation with their position already locked in legislation?) but it would have kept his party from splitting on the issue.

I think its a smart move politically. Clearly established that he is trying to take the Liberal party in a new direction- closer to the middle that Howard was steering away from in the end.

Whenever I think of Turnbull I always picture the fellow depicted in 'Packer's Lunch', and not a major political heavyweight.

Anytime you have split your party you have made a bad move, you can not effect any meaningful change if you can not take power.

I also think it foolish of Labor to lock us into a postion that may cost us billions while the real cause of the problem the US, China, India hold their cards to their chest before they even go to Copenhagen. Labor is because they wanted to split the Liberals, want to deliever a huge domestic political win, outflank the Greens, but when the cost comes in, it may backfire on them, people will not be poor to be good.

That would have to be the Department of Immigration, but if there was a huge tide actually getting in and hiding given the controversial nature of Howard's "Pacific Solution" Labor would have jumped all over him, they did not because there is not, not even under Labor with the Labor changes.

Ya know, I cannot believe how bloody stupid this all is. When it comes to Federal, I am Labor, always have been. Same with State, except in the last two elections. So..............there is my hand on the matter.

These current Federal Libs are totally fucked, but stupid me reckoned their best chance was with Turnbull. Somewhere in PA archives, you will find me saying that ever since Hayseed got the bullet.

Who? Abbot? Fuck off.

Hockey...............hmmmm................nay, fuck off.

Who is the Messiah?

I think these resignations could be mistaken demonstrations of loyalty to the old policies and position of Howard - that or having been let off a very tight leash when he left.

I suppose though that Howard had much genuine support in his own party so these resignations could just be genuine heartfelt opinion based.Andto be fair, not necessarily anti-environmental, although very likely to be seen so.

I don't see why he won't retain the leadership. If these people had had the numbers on their side they would have challenged earlier. They are trying to pressure him to resign and other party members to think he should resign "for the good of the party", which of course is to dvance their own positions.

I think he should immediately replace them in shadow cabinet and not let them back for quite some time.
