So what I think you’re saying is we have a fight or flight mode. This is innate.

@ sprint
If you were walking past an alleyway and say some shady characters down there, do you keep alert and quiet ?
Sprint I dunno, but maybe you're actually suggesting that stereotyping (which is a form of bias) is correct?

All human beings stereotype. It's innate. So if for example I walk past an alleyway and see two little old ladies down there, in twin sets and pearls, there is no need to "keep alert and quiet" because in an instance I stereotype little old ladies as no threat. However, if I walk past that same alleyway, and see 2 hells angel's bikies in leathers, I keep "alert and quiet", because I immediately stereotype them as a threat?

How about that?

I am a 44 year old white anglo-saxon woman. I fly quite often. The last 4 out of 5 times I have been through airport security I have been security wanded. This pisses me off.

How many white middle aged women have hijacked a plane? Ever? They are not stereotyping, and stereotyping (what you call "bias") is correct.

I'm still trying to work out what this has to do with science, tech and innovation.

Anyone?

yes, and the security should show bias.

To be biased in some ways comes naturally through learned instincts and experience, an unconscious bias.

Conscious bias is another thing entirely and usually hinged on prejudice.

First principles: science, technology and innovation can't be any good for us if we haven't got our heads screwed on right or they will just be more tools misused.

To be unconsciously biased indicates to me a lack of intelligence and learning on the part of the person making that biased decision. To be consciously biased, shows a lack of understanding and a conscious decision to make an unfair decision on the basis of learned prejudice. Is that prejudice valid? Is that biased decision fair? I do not think so generally. At it's worst it results in bigotry, the person/thing being decided against is not being judged fairly. At it's least, it results in people being hurt and treated badly. We should always try and educate ourselves at every turn and think hard about our decisions. If we submit to bias and at it's worst, bigotry it shows an unintelligent, easy response to a given situation rather than one which has actually been thought through.
