Aussies at War

Post by Neferti » Sat Oct 14, 2017 5:34 pm

Australian military history overview

These short chapters cover Australia's involvement in war, from the time of the first settlement at Sydney Cove in the 18th century to our peacekeeping roles under United Nations auspices and the First and Second Gulf Wars. This material has been prepared by the Memorial's Military History Section.

Colonial period, 1788–1901
Sudan, March–June 1885
South African War (Boer War), 1899–1902
China (Boxer Rebellion), 1900–01
First World War, 1914–18
Second World War, 1939–45
Occupation of Japan, 1946–51
Korean War, 1950–53
Malayan Emergency, 1950–60
Indonesian Confrontation, 1963–66
Vietnam War, 1962–75
Iraq: the First Gulf War, 1990–91
Afghanistan, 2001–present
Iraq: the Second Gulf War, 2003–09

Aussies have volunteered for every war since Australia became Australia. Our Boys (and Girls) didn't wait for some country to threaten us, like the USA did, "we" went in, boots and all and did our bit. The only time we have had conscription was for Vietnam, another War that the Yanks got into and then expected Aussies to follow ... I still loath that war and why we let so many young Aussie males get killed for nothing!

Last I heard "we" had ONE troop in Afghanistan (or was it Iraq?) ... whatever ... we sent some poor bloke because the Yanks wanted our "involvement" ... (George Bush era)

Our Aussie SAS are just as good as the Yanks equivalent. We do a lot of Peacekeeping. We are not war mongers.

Let it rip, guys and gals! ;)

Australia is very fortunate in that it is lucky to have the U.S. Military to protect it.

THAT is why members of the Aussie Military follow the U.S. into battle.

We protect you.....completely.....and we are glad to do it.

My Granny used to say "Don't panic, remember Pearl Harbour" ... as kids we asked who Pearl Harbour was, assuming Pearl was a girl.
