You will note that the trees in question are reaching the end of their lives at 450 years and that decaying old growth adds to the release of greenhouse gasses....
There are younger trees still growing as well, you might just have to wait 50 or 100 or 200 years instead of 500.
There is debate on that and actually there are studies to suggest not only that old growth forests are in equilibrium with regard to carbon but also that they can contribute to storing carbon.
And regardless, we aren't just talking global warming when it comes to conservation but also the unique ecological diversity that exists in old growth forests which will take the same time to rebuild as it has to develop.

Natural decay is more or less neutral (tending towards storage, as some of the carbon is laid down into the soil and sub-soil). As trees in a forest grow (and store carbon) others decay (and release carbon).
Simple stuff.

Just as any use of ends up with exactly the same release of carbon no matter what you do with the product. Unless you lefties have managed to change the laws of physics as you have dictionary meanings?boxy wrote:Natural decay is more or less neutral (tending towards storage, as some of the carbon is laid down into the soil and sub-soil). Not when you dig up and burn, in a few decades, carbon that took millions of years to lay down, deep in the earth.
Like I said, simple stuff.

Where do you think it was before then? Before the plants used it?boxy wrote:Not when you dig up and burn, in a few decades, carbon that took millions of years to lay down, deep in the earth.
