None of the companies wanting to tender put up a useful proposal

So govt will set up a company, with private investment in it welcome, to build the network

Fibre to the Home

Will compete in a major way with Telstra

Billions to be spent

Govt will sell down its share in the company 5 years after network built.

Lots of employment building the network

Forgive me for not sounding too excited but it feels like we've been hearing this for years,but it never happens.
Rudd turned this in to a big deal with an 8 30 press am conference this morn saying its the biggest infrastrucure build in oz history, bigger than the snowy, so it better go ahead if he wants to keep any cred,lots of people have been talking about a major project to help the economy, but is this really it?

Yes well let's hope that the Chinese aren't the major investors. They would love to get their hands on this. Just think if this money had been put into Telstra, instead of it being sold off - we would possibly have one of the best broadband services in the world. Instead - we're starting all over again and taxpayers will have to pay twice. It's a great idea, but will it be "Australian owned"?

And with 100megabits (but lets be realistic here, by the time it’s rolled out it probably be gigabit) - the media, ALL MEDIA will change forever.

Even Telstra welcomes the FTTH proposal, as does Optus. Nuts claim it was their idea.

Yes - and the largest amounts of $200,000 going each to Australia's 3 wealthiest private schools. From there it goes backwards down to $60,000 - no doubt these lower amounts for public schools. Julia Gillard (although she has seemed OK) believes that these large amounts given to private schools will generate work - so why wouldn't these large amounts generate work from public schools?

Why if we get this thing up and running will the Government want to sell it? It's going to take 8 years and will this technology even be up to date when it's finally completed. We've also got to ask - do we really need super fast broadband?
