Christchurch District Court Judge Stephen O'Driscoll said that when questioned about the video, Arps had described it as "awesome" and had shown no empathy toward the victims.

Justice O'Driscoll said the 44-year-old had strong and unrepentant views about the Muslim community and had, in effect, committed a hate crime.
"Your offending glorifies and encourages the mass murder carried out under the pretext of religious and racial hatred," he said.

Regarding the personal responsibility part... my point there being, that Adern wants to silence these sorts of videos from being shown to the public. Hence this man's sentencing. Her reasoning? She doesn't want these types of killings glorified. She doesn't want 'copycats' gaining inspiration from it.

My point is, if you ban everything that may inspire the 'evil' side of humans, where does it end? We would have nothing. We would learn nothing, and we would be blinded from reality because nanny state governments deem us feeble minded and weak.

I watched the Ted Bundy tapes last night. Why not ban those from being aired? One could argue he was glorified. The charming, non-suspecting law student kills tons of women, escapes jail twice and then his trial is publicised. A wet dream for any sicko who desires fame and dreams of raping and killing women. You bring up an interesting point about the "seeds". The ideas that are planted into our brain. I think belief plays a huge role in a person's actions. However, I also believe in personal responsibility.

You may be surprised, for instance, how common people may fantasize about murdering somebody. Could be an arsehole boss, a lover that cheated on you, a family member that betrayed you, etc. It is quite normal, out of anger, to imagine doing it. However, only certain people triggered or motivated by extreme rage, or perhaps combined with alcohol or meth, would actually go through and do it.

Same goes for men who rape women. I have one older brother, seven years my senior, and I grew up around him and his friends talking about how they wanna rape a woman up the arse, and many other horrible things I won't go into. Were they rapists, did they give into their depraved fantasies? No. (Well, not to my knowledge, but you would be surprised how common such conversations between males are).

The brain is susceptible to many ideas, ideas that came before us. Should governments be allowed to make laws that prevents knowledge (good or ill) from being passed down to the masses, because some people can't control their actions?
