I've always been amazed at the resources in Africa and how little Africans have accomplished. The best example of success was Egypt 3000 years ago.
Of course you can lay the blame at the feet of European Colonisation for that. It all depends on how you measure success, Tex. I assume you are awed by people who built things, like Pyramids... :roll
What they built then is far more than anything they are building now.
Of course, you ignore such structures as Greater Zimbabwe...

Societies are about a lot more than just structures, Tex. European colonisation reshaped an entire continent for the worse for the inhabitants of it. All to benefit the Europeans, rather than the Africans. :roll

Why didnt their colonization all around the rest of the world end up in failed states like in Africa Brian?

Just wondering?

Different sorts of society suffered differently to colonisation efforts. Colonisation was also different in different places and times. Africa suffered from some bad epidemic diseases. They had evolved their own settlement patterns which avoided those regions and the European colonisers swept that aside. Then you have slavery. While it was started primarily by the Arabs but the Europeans and then the Americans quickly provided markets for the slaves. This all set out in Diamond's "Gun, Germs and Steel" in some detail.

Where did I mention buildings, Brian? Egyptians had aqueducts, and were pioneers of evaporative cooling. They were skilled in embalming and some medical knowledge.
Centuries later, most of Africa can't produce clean water and live in mud huts while fighting animals off with spears. That doesn't amaze you?

No, why does it amaze you? Perhaps I don't assume that one part of a continent could conquer the rest in the way you seem to assume. :roll

Do you think it's normal for a whole continent to go backwards in technology while the rest of the world has advanced as it has? Do you think conquest is the only way to spread advancements? We're arguing from opposite sides of the world and they are pooping in their drinking water.

Considering that the Egyptians were conquered multiple times by various other civilisations does tend to suggest your original presumption of them somehow being able to spread their technological development across Africa was a bit stuffed, Tex. We are on opposite sides of the world while Africa is pretty stuffed and we partly owe that to your nation (and partly to mine and to China as well). As I have pointed out Africa was pretty well stuffed because of the Europeans sailing over the horizon and declaring they now ruled the place. The point I am making is that it wasn't all the African's fault and when you acknowledge that your nation had a hand in, we'll be closer to the truth of the matter. Slavery was a huge drain on Africa. Your country was one of the main places to sell human beings.

I reckon they'd have been better off if the Chinese had a different idea about imperialism when Zheng He sailed over the Eastern Horizon in 1405 CE.

Pretty sure it was the Europeans who brought the slave trade to the Americas.
