Different sorts of society suffered differently to colonisation efforts. Colonisation was also different in different places and times. Africa suffered from some bad epidemic diseases. They had evolved their own settlement patterns which avoided those regions and the European colonisers swept that aside. Then you have slavery. While it was started primarily by the Arabs but the Europeans and then the Americans quickly provided markets for the slaves. This all set out in Diamond's "Gun, Germs and Steel" in some detail.

No, why does it amaze you? Perhaps I don't assume that one part of a continent could conquer the rest in the way you seem to assume.

Considering that the Egyptians were conquered multiple times by various other civilisations does tend to suggest your original presumption of them somehow being able to spread their technological development across Africa was a bit stuffed, Tex. We are on opposite sides of the world while Africa is pretty stuffed and we partly owe that to your nation (and partly to mine and to China as well). As I have pointed out Africa was pretty well stuffed because of the Europeans sailing over the horizon and declaring they now ruled the place. The point I am making is that it wasn't all the African's fault and when you acknowledge that your nation had a hand in, we'll be closer to the truth of the matter. Slavery was a huge drain on Africa. Your country was one of the main places to sell human beings.

I reckon they'd have been better off if the Chinese had a different idea about imperialism when Zheng He sailed over the Eastern Horizon in 1405 CE.
