When I was about 12 or 13 we were told in History that we had descended from apes. Evolution, right? Then in Religious Instruction we were told that God created the world and about Adam and Eve. I decided that someone was lying and haven't cared very much about it since. :D

Scientists still can't prove anything conclusive and since nobody has come back from Heaven to let us know about that, religious people can't prove anything either. I am sure there are more important things to be discovered. For example, why do some people constantly LIE? ;)

I took a different path.

1. They told me the tooth fairy was real
2. They told me the easter bunny was real
3. They told be santa was real
4. They told me god was real

Ting ting...... 3 strikes and you're out.

My observation of my part of the universe fitted in with what science was teaching was real.... I've stuck with that since 10 years old.

My parents didn't do the tooth fairy or easter bunny. They aren't in heaven.

So what DO you believe then? What are you telling your kids?

I have a 4 1/2 year old. No mention of god. She believes in fairies and that magic is real. If you wish hard enough your dreams can come true. I explain everything I can about the world in factual logical terms that she can understand. Death is a topic every now and then.

My belief is simple.

I am a complex organic electro-chemical reaction that is the result of billions of years of evolution. I have no special place in the universe as an individual. I am insignificant in space and in time.

When I die that will be the end of me as a being. There is no afterlife and there is no god that is interested in me and my affairs as I go about life. I believe in coincidences and they can sometime feel mystical. I believe I have an inbuilt nature that has a deep primative instinct that does not like unknowns and seeks to rationalise the world. When this innerself is unwell my instincts go wrong. Some keep this in check by believing there is a god and they gain benefit from this believe and from praying to this mythical god. I don't.

When I die I will be returned to the cycle of life. If I am buried I could make good compost for worms or if burned my carbon atoms will eventually be absorbed by other life on the planet.

All in all, I believe that religion has a part to play as it has in history in teaching that people need to get along with each other and there are some fundament rules to make society work. A good start, the first start and that now the separation of the state and religion is the right thing. Modern society has built on these early religion based laws and gone beyond it. We have no need for religion now except I think it should remain the right of an individual to choose what they believe in. It is a personal thing only.

I will let my daughter learn about a christian god and let her make her own choice. It will be influences by my bias however only in that I can provide a scientific explaination for everything that will allow her to form her own mind on the matter.

She too will learn from the 3 strikes. She believes in Easter Bunny, Santa and Tooth Fairy...... the 4th one will get her too.

You sound normal, SN. Little girls need fairies, things that are pink and Dora the Explorer. Then comes Barbie and all things purple. By 7 or 8 they HATE all that stuff.
