Perhaps the reason we don't come down harder on visa overstayers is because they are usually self sufficient. In most cases we know who they are because they have passports and they either get paid cash in the hand, which of course isn't good for the economy in the long term or pay a huge amount of tax because they haven't got a tax file number. For the lucky ones - their families subsidise them.

Regardless of the deaths which can't be avoided under any political party in governance - the boat people take precedence over genuine refugees who are forced to live in camps indefinitely.
