Of course the practical solution would have been to tow back the boat in "distress" - but Indonesia refuses to allow this. Gillard won't step on any toes - unless they are ours.

Will Abbott fare any better with his proposed policy of turning the boats back? It's highly unlikely, but it's easy for him to talk the talk when he actually doesn't have to make any decisions.

It has always been government policy to tiptoe around Indonesia and intelligence would have given us good reason to do this. Howard was also generous and catered to their demands. Under his watch we substantially funded refugee camps over there - yet they were never utilised for their intended purpose and so we had the double expense of maintaining Nauru.

THE Indonesian government has confirmed that it would not accept the towing back of asylum seeker boats to its shores, sources say.

Senior sources familiar with discussions in Darwin this week between the Indonesian and Australian governments said ''Indonesia made it clear to us'' that it would not tolerate what is a key element of the Coalition's strategy. The Herald has been told that one of those who conveyed this message was the Indonesian Foreign Minister, Marty Natalegawa.

One senior Australian official said it was obvious it would be impossible to tow back boats and have a constructive relationship with Jakarta.

''It would take the relationship off a cliff,'' the official said.

In fact, most illegals arrive on a plane with a holiday visa and simply don't go home again. I'm trying to ascertain if your numbers in your opening post include them, or whether you are only including refugee arrivals on boats.

I'm starting to think you don't even know yourself where your numbers come from. So where did you come up with the numbers which you used in your claim of a record for jools? The herald sun? Facebook?

So IQ, care to give a breakdown of those figures, for example do they include the AS (there are no illegal migrants, anyone is entitled to claim asylum in Australia) coming to Australia from Nauru? Be nice to see some context too, like global refugee numbers.
