Abbott is just a little dough puppet to Howard. He's probably got another 25 years in him and will pull strings until the day he dies. Howard knows he couldn't manipulate Costello hence the recent hate campaign from his buddies. Costello was also a good administrator as would be Turnbull given the chance.

I trust John Howards judgment on this, this and have read Lazarus Rising (His autobiography, which explains much if not everything) and whilst Costello was a gifted treasurer, he was not without fault, party loyalty wise...this and would not have made a suitable leader, hence Howard went down with the ship when he did knowing full well what the outcome would likely be.

Howard is confident Abbott will do a fine job, therefore so am I.

Howard is a patriot, and a true party loyalist, something a lot of rising politicians from both sides of politics lack these days, Abbott being somewhat of an exception.

Some will argue he is too much of a traditionalist, "old fashioned" but when it comes to core party values and ethics, I could never get tired of these, and in time, most of you will come to realise this too when you realise what might have become of Australia had Abbott not become PM when he did.

Lets face it, you cant be loyal or faithful to a nation you serve, if you cant even be faithful and loyal to your chosen party.

Abbott's our best bet, this and will succeed and make for a fine PM.

You have absolutely nothing to worry about.

Don't believe everything Howard said/says - he is clever at manipulating his words. Political parties also have to be loyal to the people not just the party heavyweights.

Why isn't there a decent moderate party around?

Looking at the radical cuts some of the Lib states are experiencing - a federal Lib/Nat won't be any better. O'Farrell has allowed duck hunting and recreational shooting in National Parks to resume which means that the Greens still have appeal as they oppose this as well as excessive coal & gas exploration. Hopefully it will carry over into a vote for them at the next Federal election - for NSW voters at least.

Mantra, the Greens have you brainwashed into thinking Abbott is some kind of evil-doer, but you need to put things in perspective here.

The Greens have done a deal with Labor, are in bed with them. It's as simple as that.

So who are those really doing evil, intentionally misleading voters?

What could honestly be worse than the current poor excuse for a wayward government being lead by either Rudd or Gillard, when between them, they are both as treacherous and opportunistic as it gets.

Not to mention disloyal and unpatriotic to both their nation and party.

Are you saying, better the devil you know?

If so, this is regressive not progressive, of which kinda contradicts your 'progressive' left stance.

Think about it.

None of the political parties have much to offer. You have to decide what party has policies best suited to your ideology and of course the future wellbeing of our progeny. There was little I liked about the Coalition's policies when they were in government, although a couple of decades earlier I might have embraced them. Values change.

Being told how to vote and what to think is not progressive Mantra, and the Greens want you to swallow up their wad of support for an unscrupulous 'regressive' Labor party regardless.

If the greens told you to stick your head in the fire, would you?

It was a big mistake for the Greens to get in bed with the reds, one they will never live down, no thanks to Brown.

Like they say.... red and green should never be seen.

The Greens tell me nothing, but they are needed as ankle biters. I didn't think it was a great idea for them to form a coalition with Labor and knew it would be a mistake - however when Labor is decimated next year another party is still needed to remind the Libs/Nats that they can't do as they please.

Greens went from ankle-biters to brokers very quickly when they whored their preferences off to Labor.

They have lost that "Friendly little party keeping the leading two honest" appeal, this and have Bob Brown to thank for it.

He got greedy, and even his former colleagues will vouch for that.

Mantra, I agree with you re- another little party being required to keep the leading two on their toes, absolutely.

The question is, who and what?

He didn't get greedy, but the Greens needed to get some long promised policies through. Unfortunately they had to make unpalatable deals in exchange. Brown has left the Party now and Christine Milne is their new leader. She has done the hard yards and seems capable and straight.
