The so-called traumatised youth in Canberra are Somalis and are currently traumatising the locals because they think we are "racist". As far as I am aware, the parents of these kids are OK but the children are ganging together, wagging school, and becoming a nuisance. We are talking Primary School age kids, not teenagers! Probably under 5 families involved but Blacks -v- Whites.

Authorities tend to back off due to the "racist" comments and connotation.

Do we really want to go down the way that the UK has?

What, Mantra, are the war-torn countries that we should accept asylum seekers from? African? Middle East? Name the countries, please!

Why aren't those refugees who come here by plane given even the briefest mention? You have to assume that the boat people are really pawns in a larger political game.

I have some sympathy for those who flee from Iraq and Afghanistan and this is obviously as a result of our interference in these countries. Pakistan is also at war as the War on Terror has spread in the Pashtun mountains so there are refugees fleeing from there also. In regard to the Africans - we know their unfortunate plight, so most asylum seekers appear to be fairly genuine.

Like many other Australians I'm concerned at the ever increasing numbers of refugees and their difficulty in assimilating and working. The majority of them have become a burden. Unfortunately the Gillard government is only obeying the protocol of the UN Refugee Convention. Abbott won't be able to fulfill his promise to turn back the boats in the way Howard did. Even when the numbers of boat people were down the plane refugee intake increased dramatically but that was never mentioned. Today it's estimated that the numbers coming here by plane and by boat are about equal.

Experts say few Australians understand that the boat people represent just a small fraction of our refugee intake - and these asylum-seekers are unfairly vilified by "expedient" politicians.

Exact plane-people figures for 2009 are not yet available, but an Immigration Department spokesman said the figure was likely to have increased at a similar rate to that of boat arrivals, which grew from 161 to 1799 since last year, in response to increased pressures within the region, including the end of civil war in Sri Lanka, which has seen many ethnic Tamils fleeing persecution.

An analysis by The Sunday Telegraph of immigration records shows that Sri Lankans represented more than 28 per cent of "plane people" who successfully applied for protection visas in 2007-08, followed by Chinese (26 per cent), Iraqis (14 per cent) and Pakistanis (7.6 per cent).

What refugees arrive via air? When did we last fly them in? VIETNAM? That lot of refugees have assimilated extremely well into Australian society. Shame the Muslims don't.

naf naf, refugees do arrive by plane but they're genuine refugees. They apply and then those that are accepted fly across.


Only the non-genuine refugees do the queue jumping and come via boat.
Perhaps there those that have failed the refugee criteria when they applied to come by plane.
