In the meantime, Stephen Smith has been putting in a mammoth effort in Defence, taming that behemoth of a Department and doubtless saving billions of dollars, esp in procurement, and making it all much more efficient.

A substantial surplus will be handed down in May.

In the UK, the NHS is in all sorts of trouble due to Cameron’s changes to it, doctors up in arms etc, just look at todays Guardian!

We hear this, but can't see an improvement in our infrastructure or services. They are as bad as they were 3 years ago and probably worse if anything. The money doesn't seem to get past the contractors/advisors of these newly formed committees and departments. It's just being wasted.

1600 people are working on the Bruce/Pacific Highway, duplicating it. 800 people died in road accidents on that road over the last 10 years (IIRC.) (Todays QT.)

This is not your local street or roads, they are local & state govt, this is main highways, building new train lines and extending others.

And the NBN of course, the infrastructure for the 21st century.

They've been working on duplicating the Pacific Highway for years, well before this govt came to power. It's a big job.

Have they? Howard cut road funding. 1600 people working on it sounds like finally some real money is being spent.

If I remember correctly, it was Hawke who started doing something to the Hume Highway. Back then I was travelling that way, regularly.

Did they ever stop working on the Pacific Highway? That is like claiming Rudd started them painting the harbour bridge again.

What a phuking joke. Rudd resigns as Foreign Minister, Abib quits the senate, and now Gillard thinks she can just appoint someone (Bob goober Carr) as Foreign Minister despite not even holding a federal seat.
Apparently the plan is to just give Abib's senate seat to Carr, but my understanding is, that is not legal. A by-election for Abib's senate seat must held first.

Not according to my memory. I've been running up and down the Pacific Hwy [and Bruce Hwy] on a semi regular basis since 1996, and have seen road works of some sort somewhere along the way pretty much every time. In the late 90s there were new bridges and overpasses going in all over the place in SEQ.
