I suspect that's not true but in any case they are the very type that shouldn't be in gaol getting exposure to career criminals.
Hmmm there are some that don’t seem to mind. When I was doing my 3 days (was only 1 night, in police cell all by myself thank fuck) for non payment of parking fines I got taken with 2 other guys, fairly young guys, teens to early 20s, in the back of a paddy wagon from the Watch House first to the Adelaide Remand Centre then because that was full to Adelaide Gaol where I got told to fuck off. Rather than stand on my dignity I dutifully fucked off back home.

The two young guys, one picked up for loitering near a hotel, really didn’t seem to care one bit about going to gaol for a little while. We had a great chat, they couldn’t believe you could get gaoled for not paying parking fines.

Trying to find a free park on the streets of the CBD is pretty damn hard, even in Adelaide where there are the parklands all round. That was a long time ago, I eventually rented some carparking space, cost about the same as the parking tickets each month.

I'd hate to go to gaol, but I've always tried to stay on the right side of the law. Quite a few years back when people who owed a lot in parking fines or fare evasion they would pay it back by being imprisoned for so many days so there would have been thousands in your situation Monk.

Is it still being done today? They probably do community service now - but even that's supposed to be a joke with armed robbers and the like not even bothering to make an appearance. There appear to be no repercussions. Australia's roots as a penal colony are still apparent today with an ever increasing criminal population, but fewer penalties.

Dunno about community service, but I imagine timesheets have to be filled in or off to gaol they go.

In SA things are different now, and since I no longer work in town no idea about how it goes.

Cutting warrants and fines out by sitting on your @)$# in gaol/jail was abolished over 10 years ago. But when you still could cut warrants/fines out in gaol/jail, you didn't even have to be in the state issuing the penalty, and you could cut it out at issuing state's rate in another state with a different cut out rate.

For example in the mid to late 90s, the cut out rate in Vic was $150 per day, NSW $100 per day, and Qld $25 per day. So if the penalty was issued in Vic or NSW and you cut it out in a Qld gaol/jail, the Vic or NSW rate applied. But a kweenslander cutting out a warrant/fine in Qld got a longer stay.

From memory the bashing of a Cronulla lad, Jamie Partlidge, in Long Bay, who was cutting out traffic fines in the mid 90s, got the abolition ball rolling on cutting out warrants/fines in gaol/jail.

If they have cut out gaol time now - it's no surprise that the NSW state debt recovery office is so huge. It must cost them a fortune in legal fees chasing these fines. If they don't recover debts now - I suppose they will when you're dead if you've got anything.
