Personally I think big thinking and keeping the lead is what the US needs to look at.
The world is moving fast to catch-up with the US. It's dominance will be lost forever is it doesn't reach out to do those things that others cannot do yet. When it does so, it brings innovation to the world.
Newt, good on ya mate. I think this is the way to go. I want a base on the Moon in my lifetime.
The US wants the world to follow it again, it needs to take the lead.
Is this a vote winner in the U?. IS this JFK type promise going to have an effect?
It would be hope to jobs and keeping ahead of the world.
If the US doesn't get off it's arse, the Chinese will rule space.

I agree
As long as the socialist keep their nose out of it, scientific advancement through the space program has been a boon to society .
Big ideas are needed but they are not generally put forward by the left because they are useless at implementation. The left should be relegated to consultancy

The left could be sent to the moon to populate it. Like Hitchhikers Guide, we could clense the Earth of them by sending them into space. Thos would save the Earth for the real people.

But what if the Klingons are kommunists?

If Donald Trump is so close to the Ruskis, why couldn't he get Vladimir Putin to put novichok in Xi Jjinping's lipstick?

We need to get off this rock in the long term.
Do all the nations need to pull together to make this happen or is competition between nations a key drive to make this happen?
It appears to me with competition we don't make bold steps. Wars, corporations, politics are are driven by competitive presures to win over an opponent. This is what we have been doign forever and is why the human race has become dominant. If we ver become one world society I think we will lose our edge and it may threaten our long term survival.
We will be run by public servants not the competition to win. Innovation will slow down or stop.
Space will become a dream.

As a tired, bleary eyed, nearly penniless and half drunk America finally peels her elbows off the sticky green felt, grabs her few remaining chips and heaves herself up from the high rollers table to stagger back to her room, she is no doubt thrilled to hear her spoiled, bratty, rich upstart little brother Australia chirp "Carn, go all in ya pussy." while pointing our that China is still packing a hefty stack of cranberries.

We still haven't sorted out the politics of Antactica. Or the arctic. Or Israel.
How much would it cost compared to the ISS?

Shitloads and I am not sure it has achieved the promised benefits to humanity.
Good for a space holiday if you have $50m to spend.

Newt Gingrich was a real friend of science before running for president then later backed off as not to scare the religious folk but his aim of a moon base is probably part JFK grandstanding and part Newt the Science Nerd.
