Sounds like if you crashed your cab into a creek with a wheel-chair bound passenger on board, you'd do a runner, ring a colleague for a lift and go down the pub for a flutter on the dogs.

Costa Concordia: Captain 'Left Ship And Called Taxi' After Crash

Meanwhile the Guardian quoted transcripts of radio calls and telephone conversations which indicated Captain Francesco Schettino was ordered by the coastguard to return to the sinking ship to continue the evacuation, after claiming the rescue was complete when it had hardly started.

Two Italian newspapers said that instead the captain walked away from the water and caught a taxi to take him away from the disaster.

Another witness, Mario Pellegrini, who is the deputy mayor of Giglio, told the Guardian he boarded the vessel around 11pm but that he never saw the captain.
Costa Concordia: Blonde Moldovian Domnica Cemortan 'Was With Captain When Ship Ran Aground'
http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/01 ... 1326989785
Costa Concordia captain Francesco Schettino was with a mystery blonde woman when his ship ran aground off an Italian island, killing at least 11, it emerged today.

The woman is believed to be 25-year-old passenger rep Domnica Cemortan, and she is reported to have been on the bridge with the captain at the time of the tragedy because he was trying to impress her.

Italian investigators want to interview Cemortan, who is Moldovian, and according to her Facebook page lives in Bucharest, Romania.

In interviews with a Moldovan television station, Jurnal TV, and a Moldovan newspaper, she claims she was only on the bridge after the accident occurred.

Passengers suggested the pair were dining together just half an hour before the ship hit the rocks. An Italian couple, Angelo Fabbri and his wife Eleonora Rossi, inadvertently photographed the couple as they took pictures of the dishes served to them in the ship's restaurant.
''Schettino, in a dark uniform, was seated in front of the woman,'' Mr Fabbri told an Italian newspaper. ''She seemed young. First of all we thought she might be his daughter. They were laughing, they seemed very happy. There's no doubt that they drank the whole decanter, the last drops were poured into the captain's wine glass.

''They stayed till 9.05pm, I know that for sure because, to record the evening, we photographed the dishes and in one, timed at 9.02pm, the captain and the woman were still at the table,'' Mr Fabbri said. ''He seemed to me a bit of a braggart, in contrast with other cruise captains that we've travelled with.''

The captain reportedly left the restaurant with the woman and the officer at 9.05pm, 37 minutes before the collision. He has insisted to investigators that he did not drink alcohol that night. Schettino faces at least 12 years in jail if convicted of abandoning his ship and multiple counts of manslaughter.
Could have been water in that decanter eh, Aussie?

Does the captain of a ship need to stay sober the whole time though? Surely the responsibility for steering would be delegated to someone else at the time.

Ships have pre-programed auto-pilots, but apparently this clown went to manual control to go closer to the island to show off, to either the islanders or the chick he got on the turps with, or maybe both.
