Gillard's Policy Kills more Boat people

The Gillard govt have already advised that about 4% of asylum seekers have died at sea trying to get to Australia.
But the govt don't know about all the boats only the ones that have made it to our perimeter.

Well even with the govt's own figures that's more than 440 people who have perished since Rudd encouraged asylum seekers to risk their lives to come to Australia.

Today, you can add another 200 plus.

I'm not sure about any new Greens policy, but Labor is under the mistaken belief that by decriminalising people smuggling, the trips will be a lot safer. They will be able to organise decent boats to bring asylum seekers over and therefore avoid the continual drownings. We really haven't a clue how many refugees lose their lives each year, but it didn't start under this government.

I think decriminalising the act of people smuggling is an even more stupid idea. It might save lives but it will become even more of a lucrative business than ever before and increase the traffic to enormous proportions. Larger operators will get in on the deal and there will be more and more boats permanently available to bring refugees to Australia. The numbers will increase tenfold overnight.

This sums up the stupidity of the Rudd & Gillard governments on the Boat people issue.

True, but there was too much opposition to it at the time and the Pacific Solution went against international law which made what we were doing illegal in the eyes of the world. For those who remained in detention centres under the Coalition for years, or were wrongly deported - we're now being forced to pay out massive amounts of compensation to hundreds of detained asylum seekers.

I'm not happy with this governments confusion on this issue either. Yes we can handle so many refugees, but it's becoming out of control. It's as though we've invited the rest of the planet to come and resettle in Australia and this is unsustainable - especially as we're getting ourselves further and further into debt just to maintain some sort of standard of living.
