Russian scientists to attempt clone of woolly mammoth

Post by mellie » Wed Dec 14, 2011 8:06 pm

Scientists from Russia and Japan are undertaking a Jurassic Park-style experiment in an effort to bring the woolly mammoth out of extinction.

The scientists claim that a thigh bone found in August contains remarkably well-preserved marrow cells, which could form the starting point of the experiment.

The team claim that the cloning could be complete within the next five years.

But others have cast doubt on whether such a thing is possible.

Mother cow?
The team, from the Siberian mammoth museum and Japan's Kinki University, said that they planned to extract a nucleus from the animal's bone marrow and insert it into the egg of an African elephant.

Similar procedures have been done before with mixed results.

In 2009 it was reported that the recently extinct Pyrenean ibex was brought back to life briefly using 10-year-old DNA from the animal's skin. The cloned ibex died within minutes of being born, due to breathing difficulties.

The Roslin Institute, famous for cloning Dolly the sheep, no longer conducts cloning work but has published some thoughts on the possibilities of bringing extinct species back to life.

It said it was extremely unlikely such an experiment would be successful, especially using an elephant surrogate.

"First, a suitable surrogate mother animal is required. For the mammoth this would need to be a cow (as best biological fit) but even here the size difference may preclude gestation to term," it said.

The success rate for such an experiment would be in the range of 1-5%, it said.

The second issue would be the need for viable whole cells.

"If there are intact cells in this tissue they have been 'stored' frozen. However, if we think back to what actually happened to the animal - it died, even if from the cold, the cells in the body would have taken some time to freeze. This time lag would allow for breakdown of the cells, which normally happens when any animal dies. Then the carcass would freeze. So it is unlikely that the cells would be viable," it said.

Assuming that viable cells are found it becomes a numbers game, it went on.

"Let's say that one in a thousand cells were nevertheless viable, practical issues come into play. Given that we have an efficiency of 1% cloning for livestock species and if only one in a thousand cells are viable then around 100,000 cells would need to be transferred," it said.

Hybrid
Charles Foster, a fellow at Green Templeton College, Oxford, seemed more optimistic.

"The idea of mammoth cloning isn't completely ridiculous.

"How the resultant embryos would fare beyond the stage of a few cells is more or less unknown," he said.

While most of the genetic coding of the embryo would come from the mammoth, some would come from the elephant ovum.

"We really don't know what the contribution of that cytoplasmic material is, or how it would interact with 'alien' DNA," he said.

It would however mean that, even if successful, the clone would be a hybrid rather than a pure mammoth.

Perhaps they might next consider cloning a super-race of military personnel with an unnatural advantage?

Ok, it's a little far fetched, but if it were possible, would they tell us about it?

Imagine cloning a pesticide/disease resistant species of Jurassic locus, what could this do to an already struggling developing nations sparse food supply virtually over night?

Fancy another Gillard, or 3?

Another Hitler even?

How do we feel about cloning in general?

Don't bother answering this question, because really, it's none of our business, it's what our MP's decide afterall.

It's their free-vote not ours.

Australian politicians casting conscience votes on contentious issues such as cloning is political, or do you beg to differ Aussey?

You must be a very bored and lonely person to set about disrupting threads and attacking posters personally the way you do.

My sympathies.

Just ignore him Mel.

They've been talking about cloning woolly mammoths for years after they found one frozen in ice.

The awful thing about cloning is that they can't clone healthy animals. It's cruel.

They will one day and that day will be soon. I thought Dolly was pretty healthy wasn't she?

Dolly was abnormal from the very beginning and had some major health issues, although she was kept alive for 6 years, poked, prodded and subjected to thousands of torturous tests. The survival rate past birth for cloned animals averages 1 percent.

Attempts to clone humans have been made illegally in private laboratories, although we'll never know the outcomes.
Cloned embryos are generally quite abnormal, with those that are sufficiently normal to survive to live birth typically representing between 0.1 and 2 percent. The problems do not end with the technical difficulty of somatic-cell nuclear transfer itself. Extensive evidence indicates that even the cloned animals that make it to birth are not untarnished success stories. Following Ian Wilmut’s production of Dolly the sheep, the world’s first cloned mammal, it was almost immediately evident that Dolly was not normal; she experienced a number of medical problems that resulted in her being euthanized, due to poor health, at the age of six years, about half the lifespan of a healthy sheep. Dolly was the only clone to survive to live birth out of the 277 cloned embryos Wilmut’s group generated, yet this success did not prove that cloning can produce a normal sheep. Dolly was merely normal enough to survive to birth.

No one will know of the outcomes of human cloning huh...mmmmm maybe not, but the real story will one day be revealed and will go something like this. :b

In 1995 an unemployed Queenslander who had married a human version of the legendary big foot had been making regular weekly donations to his local sperm bank.
Unbeknown to that queenslander his samples were not being given to women but for the Dolly project.
Then after 3 years of his self gratification into a specimen jar the Dolly project had success. Dolly was born in 1998.
The queenslander was never told of his new fatherhood. However he was invited to a tour of the Roslin Institute in the UK to see the laboritories & development. Whilst on tour, like a scene from Shakespear, the queenslander consumed a small sample of Dolly's DNA.
This had an immediate impact on his life and he decided to drop his facade of being an overseas consultant, returned to Australia and went on to be elected to parliament.
Whilst Dolly was alive so was he, he felt a drive that everyone was following him like dumb sheep. Three years after digesting Dolly's DNA he was promoted to his party's front bench. But he wasn't able to get to the top of that corporate ladder. He wanted to get higher in the party and to do so he needed more of Dolly's DNA.
So the pasty faced queenslander returned to the Dolly laboritories to see his new found love of his life and for a more complete "transformation".
After repeated sessions with Dolly and draining her of her vital life needs Dolly passed away in 2003.
Bet that the media said that some family had a lovely Sunday lamb roast and that that would explain Dolly's final outcome and prevent any of the hoons searching for her who would want some bizarre rituals or satanic rites over her gravestone. :WTF
But the truth was that Dolly's blood was being removed on a regular basis to that member of parliament. Dolly had become weaker and weaker and eventually succumbed to a lung disease and an inabilty to breath. And in the same vein as how vampires are pale although feeding on blood so to had the queenslander become paler and pastier after each Dolly session.
The queenslander's mission was accomplished. He had everything he needed and was now ready to climb that corporate ladder.
Three years after Dolly's passing he became head of his party and people were noticing him.
Even the media realised that he was a clone highlighting the fact of him being the first human clone in public office. But still people listened to him and followed him.
Then Mr Pasty faced launced himself onto the public on the back of a hope that people would still follow him like dumb sheep.
His plan worked because they did.
The queenslander became Prime Minister in 1997.

But in his world of 3-year events, he was overturned by a Jill-A-Roo ranga in 2010. :f

Perhaps under his port folio of being Foreign minister he is once again touring England at the Roslin Institute of Dolly laboritories for another sheep encounter. :OMG
Stay tuned for Spring lamb!

I agree with Mantra on this, and worry about cloning for a variety of reasons, my being an animal lover is just one reason of course, but there are so many other factors we need to consider.

I wonder if Obama is a clone of our first red Pharaoh 'Akhenaten' , ...(Perhaps the first communist dictator) ...because like Obama wants a one world order, Akhenaten wanted a one world religion.

They say history repeats itself.

Obama professes to be staunchly opposed to cloning, ...but you never know ;)

Striking resemblance...lol :bgrin

And Bart.... :rofl .... Lets just hope it really is spring lamb.

If I could have ran some tests on those shanks I purchased from Coles I would have.

Because Akhenaten sounds a little too much like Ashkenazi to me...
Akhenaten :
Historic Egyptian Pharaoh figure who most famously founded monotheism and took plague victims out of Egyptian cities to save the population. Jeremiah used the history of Akhenaten in his scripture when first forming the first Jewish scripture. He is the real Moses.

Anyone else in the mood for Sci-Fi?

:bgrin

...............The soviets sure love their clones , remember the astonishing claim of Dr. Rudolf Hegeman, who allegedly helped the Soviets clone their army of Hitlers before he suffered a debilitating stroke?

:clap
