It is difficult to get a real overview of the way things are in the USA if you don't live here, and especially if you get your information from sourses elsewhere, or limit yourself to Australian sourses only, or if you don't know how Americans are firsthand. And anyway things are not the same everywhere in the USA, there are many different life styles and subcultures here ..

Lots of odd notions about Americans abound - that they all eat at McDonalds and hang at Starbucks ... they aren't all fat. Like income, there seems to be a growing gap between the fat and the thin.

The trouble and I guess the strength of the US is it feels like 50 separate little countries under a union. Funny that.

It is so different in the middle as compared to the east coast, you would think they could not be the same country. Sterio type of a US citizen is almost impossible except for the ra ra ra we our proud to be americans. (not a bad thing to be proud of your country)

Sorry to nitpick but it is sources. You did it twice so it wasn't a typo but a spelling error. :yahoo

Yeah yeah, you're a nitpicker about spelling, Nef! That is one of the few words I usually misspell. I am not sure why that is ..

Yes Neferti is the spellchecker on these boards. My spelling used to be almost perfect, but being on the net you see so much misspelling that it's easy to make a mistake.

Americans do seem very proud of their country, but I wonder if their immigrants have the same loyalty. Second, third etc. generation Aussies feel the same way, although we don't shout it from the rooftops - but we will defend Australia and its way of life when it's badmouthed.

Not sure how this current wave of illegal and legal Hispanic immigrants feel. It seems to me they want to have it both ways.

Big day for Europe in 3 days.

Prediction.... 17 countries agree on penalty measure if a country does not comply with financial regulations and controls however in one months time we will be in crisis again.

UK loses power an influence in EU as the drive for monetary union becauses more important than ecconomic union. As euro countries form a block and becomes the new europe. UK will be on the outside looking in.

I read about that. They can't spend more than 3% of their GDP or they will be penalised. Where will the cuts be made - healthcare and pensions/welfare I assume. It will be a nightmare for places like Greece which has lived high on the hog for a while on borrowed money.

It will definitely affect us soon. We can't sell to countries who have no money.
