Pathological internet misuse

Post by mantra » Mon Nov 28, 2011 5:23 pm

Teens and young adults are spending up to 50 hours a week playing video and internet games and becoming mentally ill. Kids are weaned on computer games. I saw a toddler in his pram the other day playing away industriously on a small laptop. It obviously kept him content, but he couldn't have been any older than 2, if that.

Some parents are able to get the balance right by integrating sport and social activities into their children's schedule, but it makes you wonder where these children are going to be in 50 years time. Will there be enough help available to cope with the influx of mental illness in generations y and z and how productive will they be?

The parents could just say no.
DISTRESSED families are flooding psychiatrists with pleas for help for children dangerously hooked on computer games and the internet.

The condition known as "pathological internet misuse" is growing so rapidly among adolescents and young adults that it could soon be formally recognised as a mental health disorder.

International mental health experts are considering including "video game addiction and internet addiction" in the next edition of globally recognised Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders "to encourage further study".

One Sydney mother said her 13-year-old son was so addicted to computer games he attended school only intermittently over the past two years and violently resisted attempts to remove him from the screen.

He starts punching holes through the walls, throwing things around and threatening you . . . all this has to do with the most addictive game World Of Warcraft," she said.

Parents have told of children as young as 10 being found asleep at their home computer when they are due to leave for school because they have been up much of the night playing video games such as Minecraft.

Australian mental health specialists believe formal recognition of internet addiction will put pressure on governments to make more treatment options available for victims.

With so many social environments being a bullying feeding frenzy then I dont blame a lot of kids being isolated. The parents of these well meaning socialites need to also take some responsibilty and be involved with what their kids are doing outside the home.

If that's not bad enough then there's video games all around our environment.
Get a load of this!
VIDEO Games? In the TOILET?!

We promise we're not taking the p***. But the next time duty calls - feel free to play along.

A bar in London might fool customers into thinking every night's a quiet one - but that's not true. All the guys are just in the bathroom, The Sun reports.

Zip up, scroll down: Watch the video below

These lads' poor wives and girlfriends thought a night on the town might offer some brief respite from Red Bull-fuelled Call of Duty marathons, until they happened upon The Exhibit.

At least their men are being trained to aim properly though, so really it's win-win.

The bar's quirky urine-powered (that's right, urine-powered, it's the dream) video games offer toilet-goers a chance to put out a fire or steer a skier while they empty the tank.

Another option is a trivia game called Clever Dick. #lolz.

"We weren't sure how people would react, but on the first night after we installed it, a group of America servicemen were in the bar," said Designer Gordon MacSween.

"I heard one of them coming out of the toilet, high-fiving his mate saying, 'Twelve!'

"His pals were saying 'No way dude!' and going off to play and compete, and I thought, this is good."

That can't be good. We hope they at least washed their hands.

How revolting. Bar owners must be getting desperate. I feel sorry for the poor cleaner who has to mop up the mess.

Wonder if there is anything in the suggestion that prolonged video game playing can induce seizures. :PC
I've heard that strobe lights can do that. :h

Wonder what percentage of employers have fired employees for non-work-related internet use in which employees just couldn't help themselves?

Back in the 80-90s when computers really kicked into being a vital workstation tool Microsoft had their basic games inbuilt (Solataire, Minesweeper etc).
And back then most employees wouldn't have been too familiar with mouse usage then companies would advocate/condone the usage of employees playing computers games during work hours.
But now with the internet, some employees have really pushed the envelope and abused the whole access issue.
