The main reason for Obama to visit is to "discuss" having a permanent US Military Base up in Darwin. Posters on the ABC site seem to be against this. I wonder why?
The whole visit is so contrived and impersonal. He's here so Gillard can hand the keys of Australia over to him.
Remember when Bush visited and Bob Brown stood up to him? No-one will be able to get near Obama. Gillard is a robot. She doesn't care one little bit about the direction she's sending this country. She's just doing what she's told without any foresight of the consequences.
I see no reason to regard all of this as nothing unusual in international diplomacy and military allegiance. 'All the way with LBJ.' 'Man of Steel.' 'Weapons of Mass Destruction.' 'The Coral Sea.' There can be no doubt that the USA saved Australia in World War 2.
