Hmmm the first lot of handouts worked. Economists are supporting strongly & loudly this package.

Nick should secure more MD spending in the next budget then pass the stimulus package. To keep things moving need infrastructure that can start almost as soon as the Bill is passed--nothing like that for the MD!

Is Nick right? Not sure I like Senators adding things to Bills that do not belong together--remember Harradine?

The package will not hugely increase debt, the debt, the deficits are from fall in tax revenue and increased dole payments--people get these mixed up, incl Talcum Allbull!

Totally agree Monk..he Mr X, is so excited to have made it to the big house from the back waters but this is just an attention grab.
He cannot tell the Government how to do their job no matter how famous he wants to be.

The MD already has funds allocated to it..but Rudd has been so busy with other stuff..he hasnt got to it yet.
Yes its a lot of money but we have to trust that they know what they are doing...

I dont think Rudd and Swan are so stupid that they cant see what we fear may happen...they want to protect Australians.
We have to remember the so called "surplus" was just the Howard Govt ripping money from every essential service in this country..and if they hadnt done so we might not be quite so vulnerable now.

Labor Governs for pple, not profits.
The bush fire rebuild will be a huge task..the surplus was only going to be "in surplus" barring disasters, bushfires, recessions..Would the Libs have done it any differently anyway..NO!

Malcom Uturnbulll is in question time talking the package down , creating doubts and fears, A SCARE CAMPAIGN..and all the while obstructing the vital funds this country needs..42 billion by Australian standards sounds like a lot..but our Government is not stupid. I choose to trust Rudd and Swan and the expert economists who have supported this..We spoke admiringly of Howard making the tough decisions..why is it different now?

A little faith. Rudd is just growing into his role as a true, caring man, he can now drop the pretence he had to keep up during the election campaign to win the large conservative right wing core voter base..NOW his true spirit comes to the fore..the bush fire tradgedy had him in tears..I was touched by his obvious distress at the destruction of human life in the bushfires. Will the real Kevin Rudd please step forward?

I think he just did.

They have a compromise and it looks to me like a good one too. Well done Swan and Xenophon.

Nick has got another $500m for the MD, money probably not going to be spent for a while, so yup empty grandstanding! But the package will pass, jobs will be protected with the immediate handouts then the infrastructure spend will be starting.

A good outcome!

i think the money for stormwater drainage whatever is a good thing actually. An more money for irrigation communities to adjust is better too. Just saw Xenophon speaking on what compromises had been reached and these are two that stick in my mind. As long as he is passing the package i don't see anything wrong with the agenda he has advanced. I recall when people on another forum were talking about him being a single issue- anti pokies guy. i guess that has gone now. And the Murray- Darling and water management is important and not just to SA.

I think there was lots of grandstanding by mr x and fielding, mr x just had the nerve to say no and stick it out for what he wanted, although I dont agree with letting one man dictate an outcome the outcome is good for SA and as a rep for Sa thats his job.

The point I'd like to highlight is the Libs dealt themselves out of the whole process, not unlike bomber and the GST, I think it will come back to haunt Turnbull.

It doesn't matter who he pinched it from - this time Turnbull's right. This is total and utter porkbarrelling. Do you really think that people will spend this money - perhaps the few that need it - but the rest will just stash it away for a rainy day. You can't send mixed messages - hand the money out because we're headed into a recession and then next minute say spend it - people won't - because they're worried. Those recipients hanging out for the cash can double dip with this package as well - but many with some thoughts for the future don't want it.

Our kids are going to have to pay for this. A lot of people wouldn't have worried about this package being $20 or 30 billion if most of it had gone into infrastructure and nation building. The only people who are happy are those who want the cash - stuff paying it back - it's not their problem. Rudd promised to build up manufacturing in this country and renewable energies - instead he's just flushed it down the toilet.

I can't stand this government now. They're bloody useless and if Turnbull does a good environmental deal with the Greens at the next election - I'll back them all the way and encourage others to as well.
