Australia always had Guy Fawkes night (5th November) with bonfires until the mid 80's. Hawke cancelled it. Blame Labor.

It was probably cancelled due to Fire Restrictions. I can't remember, exactly. Usually, I think, Fire Restrictions begin at the end of October.

However, I do remember going to a Bonfire party in the mid 80's. If you missed out on Guy Fawkes night, perhaps you were just too young to remember? 1986 IS 25 years ago.

Then Kevin Rudd set about ensuring Fireworks were banned altogether whereby Australians are no longer even permitted to obtain a permit to set them off safely on fire-cracker night.
