Be VERY wary of doctors. they run a business

Had a relative that was treated for prostate cancer by the insertion of a radioactive pellet. The pellet gave him leukemia which killed him.

I'm sorry for AiA's relative, but fortunately his outcome is not common. It can't be, because all medicines, including implantable radioactive pellets, must be tested on thousands of people in clinical trials (and thousands of animals before them) before they are available for the doctors to use in their business. They are compared not just with no-treatment, but with every other available medicine and treatment (including natural therapies) and must be at least equi-effective and safer, or more effective and equally safe. These trials are blinded, randomized, performed by independent third parties with no interest in the therapy. The results are scrutinized by competitors and made publicly available. The science is of the highest possible standard.

Now all medicines carry risk, but the risk is assessed relative to benefit. Cancer's a pretty bad thing to have (though prostate cancer isn't really too bad), so the risk of the medicine can be quite high, since the risk of non-treatment is certain death. Nevertheless they all have to save far more lives than they cost. But some, like your relative, will die to the treatment before the cancer gets them. Others... in fact most others.. will have years added to their lives.

This is why we have no treatment for the common cold. Any effective treatment (such as antiretroviral therapy) would have risks which far outweigh the risk of the cold. It's not that we can't cure the cold. It's that it's not worth the risk of doing so. HIV on the other hand we treat and cure routinely. The treatment for HIV and the common cold is the same, it's just the risk of the disease which differs.

Medicine is really like no other business. In medicine you must prove all your advertising claims. You have to send these off to your competitors and harshest critics and must convince them of the benefit of what you are doing before you're allowed to do it. Even then ongoing mandatory pharmacovigilance programs ensure it remains safe and effective and if that ever changes (e.g. Vioxx) it gets pulled in spectacular fashion and you get sued into oblivion. I can think of no other business which holds itself to such a high standard.

So the idea that Jobs' physician let him die because he was more valuable sick than healthy is absurd.

I would rate it the same, Boxy .. success of treatment would be to extend length of life somewhat, but the most important thing would be to improve quality of life, no matter how long the person has left. I know this now from personal experience ..
