Gillard needs to be replaced, that's a given, BUT by who? here is my two bobs worth.
The best leader the Labor party have to offer in my opinion, is Stephen Smith, but they should not sacrifice him in such uncertain circumstances.
Rudd is the peoples choice, all the polls show Rudd would give Labor a bump if not even a win, but so many people in the party hate him and cant bring themselves to reinstate him.
Crean, in my opinion is their best option, but I dont know if he'd get the same bump Rudd would, Crean is at the end of his career he is dispensable and I think deserves the chance denied him by Beasley.
Crean would not be easily bullied by Abbott, like Gillard is, in fact Crean is a lot like Abbott and I think would give the cock a good run for his money. crean is well respected by big business and he would also bring back some of the traditional Labor faithful. I think he could pull off the upset of the century against Abbott, but I also think the Libs would dump Abbott within months of Crean taking over when they realised his bully boy tactics no longer worked against Crean. Then Labor would be fucked, because Hockey or Turnbull would kick Creans ass.
So what do Labor do? stay with Gillard for a certain defeat?
Sacrifice Smith and lose his potential future leadership?
Install Crean and hope he can make them competitive but risk the Libs getting cold feet and dumping Abbott?
OR putting forward the peoples choice,in Rudd, even tho more than half the parliamentary party hate his guts, but he could well save many seats from falling and quite possibly turn it all around and keep Labor in gov?
Personally I think crean deserves a chance and could pull it off, but I think If I were a parliamentary member and wanted to keep my job, I'd vote for Rudd.

I heard that the coalition have an unwritten rule to never criticise Crean, in the hope of boosting his chance of becoming leader of the ALP.

Yes I saw Annabelle Crab on Insiders yesterday and she said all the Libs around parliament house are talking up Creans chances of replacing Gillard because they do NOT want to face Rudd. Tho I still think Crean could take out Abbott, just no body else, its a horses for courses thing. Abbott is not PM material,Crean would highlight that, but I suspect just about anyone else could highlight that fact better than Gillard can.If Labor don't dump Gillard they are giving the worst possible candidate ever put forward as a major political party leader the chance of the PM job.

Crean is definitely not the right person for the job. The Coalition are as usual presenting the worst case scenario to put the government off balance.

I think they'll stick to Gillard. Did anyone see her on Junior Masterchef last night? She did wonders for the egos of those little kids. All the parents were beaming at her.
