Angry pro-refugee advocates have chased Immigration Minister Chris Bowen down a Sydney street after interrupting a press conference he was giving about the government's planned changes to asylum laws.

Mr Bowen was halfway through the press conference in Smithfield, in the city's west, when members of the Refugee Action Coalition arrived and began shouting over the minister as he attempted to answer questions from journalists.

Mr Bowen remained calm and after several minutes of heckling again began taking questions from journalists.

......SCANDAL-plagued Health Services Union boss Michael Williamson has resigned from two senior Labor Party posts amid allegations he received secret commissions from a union contractor.
The ALP's national office announced the development late today, saying Mr Williamson would stand down as the party's national vice-president and senior vice-president of its NSW branch.

The move follows the union's decision last week to disaffiliate from the Labor Party.

Mr Williamson and federal Labor MP Craig Thomson, a former HSU national secretary, are under investigation by NSW police following allegations they accepted secret commissions from a union contractor................

PEOPLE-SMUGGLERS had crammed 50 asylum-seekers into a tiny, secret compartment beneath the deck of an Indonesian fishing boat, where they remained hidden from a Customs boarding party until the boat docked at Christmas Island.
Customs and Border Protection was forced into an embarrassing admission yesterday, revealing that the initial search of one of two vessels intercepted within hours of each other failed to uncover almost half of its passengers.

Discovery of the "hidden" cargo was only made later at Christmas Island.

People on the second boat intercepted, which was carrying 66 passengers, apparently called contacts in Australia to report it was in trouble in international waters and in need of assistance.

Sources in Jakarta told The Weekend Australian that at least one more boat was about to put to sea, as smugglers take advantage of Australia's political impasse over asylum policy............
