Look up Possum Comitatus, has a blog on the Crikey site, can tell you how successful the HIP and BER were. In fact, if you stopped reading Murdoch publications you would not gather so much misinformation.

Malaysia failed (but not as expensively as Howard's stupid Pacific Solution!) If the HC had been consistent in its ruling then a true regional processing solution may have evolved. Anything is better than having people take to the open sea in old unseaworthy boats to reach Australia.

Only solution now is to take say 40,000 approved refugees from Malyasia and release them into the community, preferably in rural areas where there is work and accommodation for them. That should reduce the log jam of refugees and those left in Indo & Malaysia might be a lot less inclined to take the risk of stepping on one of the people smuggler boats.
