Outrage as domestic violence program ends

Known as B-Safe, and similar to medical alerts that call emergency help with the press of a button, the federally funded scheme has been successfully trialled in Victoria.

Over 70 women in Victoria and more than 140 of their children have come to rely on the alarms in the past three years.

But the $125,000 program ended on Wednesday.

B-Safe project officer Rachael Mackay says the news comes as a blow to many women, who have suffered years of abuse.

"One woman, I could literally feel her breath over the phone. She just gasped to me," she said.

"I had to say to her, 'Look, we can keep you on until August,' and she sort of heaved a sigh of relief. It's horrific. My job is horrific."

Ms Mackay says the concept for B-Safe has been very simple and very effective.

In NSW Fatty is already instituting WorkChoices for state public servants and that will be copied federally for all workers--Abbott actually said this yesterday.

And collectively all this austerity is making a new Long ("Great") Depression more and more a certainty.
