What a heap of parrot droppings! They were doing the wrong thing, they knew they were doing the wrong thing and thought the way to fix it was a PR campaign!

If you are knowingly doing the wrong thing you cannot expect compensation! I suggest they get their act together and build some abbattoirs here and start selling frozen halal beef.

Live shipment is so cruel.

Animals standing there in their pens, in the accumulating piles of their waste, breathing increasing amounts of ammonium from those wastes, Any animal that falls down won’t get up, most likely. The animals are not used to the movement of a ship, they are in semi darkness—the ninth circle of Hell would not hold more terrors!

It is a disgusting trade!

And why does this trade go on? Because the fucking farmers etc don’t want to pay the going rate for proper abattoir workers here! Greed, in other words. And these cu nts want compensation? No way!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The implications for the Australian beef and cattle industry from the suspension of the live cattle trade to Indonesia will impact the entire industry, across every state. The impact will be felt the hardest across northern Australia, especially for those producers in the NT and WA who have no other outlet for their cattle.

However, the suspension of the live cattle trade to Indonesia will neither result in a rush of cattle into Australian processors, nor a surge of beef in coming weeks and months. Cattle placed on ships to Indonesia are typically Brahmans of light weight (less than 350kg lwt). These cattle will require much longer periods on feed to reach suitable slaughter weights for either the Australian, or more particularly, export markets.

Indeed, the very good season that has been experienced across much of northern Australia, especially western Queensland, will largely allow the additional cattle to be accommodated and gain weight.

Cattle prices seasonally ease throughout May and June, as additional numbers enter the slaughter markets upon the completion of the wet season. In recent weeks, and in coming weeks, the main influence upon export cattle prices will continue to be sluggish demand in Japan and the US, along with the near record high A$.

The EYCI finished Thursday at 385¢/kg cwt - 2.5¢ below last week and 4% above the corresponding period last year.

Therefore, the most impact for the entire beef industry will be felt in the medium term if the situation is not resolved quickly, as heavier cattle move through to slaughter in 6-18 months time.

Hmmm and they acted like Armageddon was around the corner! Build some abattoirs, idiots! Give some jobs to Australians you greedy shits!

I saw yesterday in the paper that teh Indonesian government is goign to sort things now so maybe the blanket ban to Indonesia was called for. I have also seen it is supported by many in the industry because they don't want their animals treated like shown on the 4 corners show.
I think that blindly accepting meat because it was killed in a way that conforms to centuries old tradition is a fucking shameful practice. It was probably state of the art slaughtering at the time, and done with hygene and animal welfare in mind. But we have moved on, and there are much better ways to do it now, for better results in both areas. The problem is, there are no modern day prophets to change the letter of divine law.

And being halal seems to be more important than stressing the animals, or even beating the shit out of them.

But, reading between the lines, it looks like it is small operators causing the problem here. Ameteurs. It's not efficent, and it would produce an inferior product, even if you ignored the animal welfare issues. Stressed animals are not good eating.

Not sure what to make of MLA missing such abuses, but the slaughtermen being willing to beat the shit out of animals in front of animal welfare people who were obviously filming them. The best I can suggest is that the MLA has been going for incrimental improvements.

The suspension is warrented, but could have been handled better. At least a few days notice, instead of having stock already loaded or in holding yards having to be returned. I don't think compenstation should be given.

They don't want meat shipped from here, they want live animals so they can be killed by their own silly rules.

I did specify halal meat.

It was a way of keeping hygiene in hot climates. Now it is stupid. Same applies to kosher meat.

Of course it is. Religious bullshit. A fine idea at the time, but to tie it to "the word of god"... which can never change is what is stupid.

But still, I doubt that breaking the leg of cattle, or beating them for not getting up is exactly halal either.

We should be able to trade with the good operators, and blackban those that cock it up, and that should be the first priority. Reapproving the majority of abbs that where/are doing it right.

On Q&A this evening, Katter made one good point. Why isn't the Minister up there right now, visiting these abattoirs, and ticking boxes? Yes, there had to be an immediate response following the 4 Corners programme, but, as Katter has complained, to summarily kill off an entire industry for six months was unnecessary.

As for the religious shit, of course we in the West will agree. But go tell that to the Muslims, and then shake hands with reality.

It'd be like them telling us they wont trade with us unless we give up the grog and bikinis...

Halal slaughter can be done humanely. That's all we need to worry about.
