Two Australian soldiers were killed in Afghanistan on Monday in a "very bad day" for the Australian Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston has announced.
One of the soldiers was a 25-year-old lance corporal who was shot by an Afghan National Army soldier with whom he was serving on guard duty at a patrol base in the Chora Valley.
The Australian, from the Mentoring Task Force, was airlifted to the Australian base at Tarin Kowt but died from his wounds.
The Afghan soldier fled the scene and escaped despite being shot at by another Afghan soldier.
Afghan and Australian forces are now hunting for the gunman.
The dead soldier had served in East Timor and started his tour in Afghanistan last November.
In the second incident, an Australian pilot died when a Chinook helicopter on a resupply mission crashed 90 kilometres east of Tarin Kowt.
The other Australians on board the helicopter were evacuated to a medical facility and are in a satisfactory condition.
The man killed was a lieutenant who had recently served flying rescue missions during the Queensland floods.

Yes, makes you think when a member of the army they are there helping train turns on an Aussie soldier- well, what is the point?

My people have checked with their people....
1. Helicopter. Not yet known whether it was forced to land after successful enemy fire, or mechanical failure. The landing was not 100% controlled, and one, a passenger who was a pilot, was killed in the landing. Several other survivors from whom the truth may be gained. Nearby Yank Helicopter landed...took survivors and deceased away, not before totally destroying the grounded helicopter.
2. Soldier. Three blokes occupying a guard post in green zone. Two Afghan Army and now deceased Aussie. One Afghan leaves the Post to have a leak. In his absence, the remaining Afghan puts three bullets into the Aussie. Suspicion that possible cause may have been provocative insults from the Aussie. Shooter flees/runs....other Afghan is returning to the post...has heard the three shots... sees his Mate fleeing, and shoots....not known whether at the Killer or random to cover his own arse.
In each case, we the Public will get a version (via the Media) which will resemble the truth, but any embarrassing details will be hushed.
There ya go....a PA scoop. Ya heard it here first.
