NSW battens down for wild winds

Residents along much of the New South Wales coast are being warned to brace for "damaging" gale force winds on Wednesday.

The weather bureau says wind gusts of up to 100 kilometres per hour will hit the Illawarra, Sydney and the Hunter through to the mid-north coast.

The fierce winds and likely heavy showers will start in the morning and last until the early afternoon.

The State Emergency Service says its volunteers will be on stand-by to assist people and has warned residents to secure items and steer clear of trees and power lines.

The wind's been very strong here .. and heaps of tree branches have come down.
