Property doesn't really thrill me as it is really a set and forget investment. Shares are much more dynamic.

Those forums are full of speculators, rampers and trolls in between the odd bit of advice that is useful.

People have been known to post garbage to ramp a stock hoping you will buy while they are selling. The reverse is also true.

Do your own research and take only company instrumentals as fact

Research.

I found it a lot easier once I had opened a share trading account (through your bank, CBA etc) it seems to have all the relevant information for the companies you are looking at.

Mine (and I guess others) has a list of not only the stock that you have bought but stocks you are looking at and links to all relevant info. You can create a list, for example of all copper/gold/whatever miners and track how well they are performing (or not) and have them SMS you if the price moved beyond a certain rang/ company announcement.

For example, I was looking into small to mid-cap gold/copper miners so I did a search and added a list of companies to my 'stock watch'. Researched them and picked a few that I thought worthy

Check the chart history as well. It can give you an indication of trend.

This one is for Lynas- one of the rare earth miners. Although this chart is shit. I prefer a longer outlook, but it does show a perfect buying opportunity. That big dip was caused by one of the directors selling off a large stake and it caused panic selling but there was no real change to company's bigger picture
