I've been unfortunate to have been acquainted with IQ long enough through the blogosphere to know that the only fruitful discussion you'll have with him is if you ask him about animal pornography (his area of special interest).

My shares are heavily weighted to the resource sector.
I have a fair few bluechips such as Rio/ BHP/CBA plus a few tech stocks that that pay dividends and have had reasonable growth (comprise about 30-40% of the portfolio) but I did pick most of them up mid 2009 when the market had bottomed/ started to recover after the GFC but I'm not adverse to risk, so the balance is heavy into mid-cap miners & exploration companies.

The only tip I can really give you is research, research, research.
Check the value of the company assets vs their market cap
Check who is on the board and do they have a track record
Buy low, sell high yadda yadda yadda

Nearology can sometimes work in your favour.
I picked up $20K worth of Sandfire shares on a hunch @ $0.45ea.
They are sitting around $7.00 now...
THX is just down the road looking at the same minerals, so I put $7K into them at $0.23. They are at $0.46 but have been as high as $1.00

Anyone digging for gold has been a pretty safe bet

Industrials have been lacklustre for some time but I would expect that you will see some start to experience some gains
