What a load of bigoted garbage.

25 years ago this guy, as a teenaged heroin user himself, was busted for conspiring to import drugs, sentenced, jailed and consequently released after completing his sentence. On that basis alone he has met societies requirements for atonement. Since that time he has worked hard, paid taxes and directly contributed to the betterment of society in a manner greater than most of you pathetic keyboard warriors.

Absolutely!

A former heroin user, he served almost three years in jail in the 1980s after being arrested when he was 19 for conspiracy to import narcotics.

But he pulled himself together and has gone to make an impressive contribution to the community in public service - and the purpose of our justice system and jail is to rehabilitate, not lifelong punishment ...

There's an argument that an offence conducted 20 years ago - and he’s never re-offended - should probably be expunged from the public record and the public memory.

To bring it up again now is a cheap political shot that does not address the calibre of the man, his intelligence or capability to carry out the job to which he has been appointed.
