I find the Evidence Amendment (Journalists’ Privilege) interesting.

8-) This government is becoming more Orwellian by the day.

Oh so you guys are still interested in politics afterall....I thought with the presidential style campaign taking the Political out of Political animal, you guys wouldn't even bother reading this topic.

Wonders will never cease.

PS, have you read the bill in question, or were you too busy sniffing your own brand and campaigning for admin access?

Ahhh yes I did. Thats why I asked the question of you. How does a bill which is passed by both sides of government in both houses, which amendments from the Greens and the Opposition, which is introduced as a private members bill by a Independant MP equal Orwellian behaviour by our government?

Especially since the bill is actually trying to protect journalistic privilege by legislating their right to protect their sources identity?

Recall the media hounding and having access to Howard during his morning walks, in contrast to Rudds and Gillards "closed" press conferences?

Which has precisely what to do with the bill?

New shield laws mean better protection for journalists

21 March 2011

Attorney-General Robert McClelland today welcomed the passage through Parliament of the Evidence Amendment (Journalist’s Privilege) Bill 2010 – the first Private Member’s Bill to pass Parliament since the re-election of the Gillard Government.

The new laws will strengthen provisions relating to information provided to journalists and requires Courts to consider whether:

• information was passed contrary to the law in determining whether evidence should be admitted, or whether a source should be revealed; and

• there will be potential harm to the source and / or the journalist if evidence is given.

“The Commonwealth Government supported the Private Member’s Bill put forward by the Member for Deniso...

Just more bureaucracy, do you honestly think this will make way for a more journo-friendly media ... looks like a lot of inconsequential judicious redtape and bullshit to me.

You tell me, what's changed?
