Have you ever tasted wild duck? It is horrible, very little meat on a bird. My Dad used to go duck shooting and bring home a pile of the things which us kids had to pluck out in the backyard. Mum eventually refused to cook the things. I'd call it mass slaughter for no good reason as nobody in their right mind would eat the things.

There are a couple of issues involved.
Firstly, there are some types of rare duck that cannot be shot but I bet do get shot (willing to be proved wrong on this.)
If ducks are shot just for sport not the table than that is fucking crap and a reason to ban/reduce/restrict hunting season/bag limits etc.
I have never shot ducks but have fished and shot a few bunnies—and ate what I shot/caught.

There are plenty of other native waterfowl that are shot indiscriminately on these "hunts". SA is one of the states where it is permitted - no doubt the Shooters & Fishers Party has got a foot in the door there.

Native kangaroo are also shot, mantra.
The issue should be rare species and their conservation, not get emotive.
