Actually I have thought about fishing quite a bit over the years and think the process could be greatly improved. Angling causes a lot of unnecessary suffering to the fish - through ignorance and callousness.

I have nothing against someone hunting a duck for food - but the rampant slaughter of thousands of ducks for no reason aside from the "pleasure" of killing is senseless. Most of the ducks are just left to rot where they die. What's the point. Surely they could use inanimate objects for target practise instead - or is the noise of terrified crying from the birds a turn on for the hunters?

Yeah, you make a good point Dring, but so does Mantra. These 'duck hunters' are really just 'duck shooters,' and they have no real interest in actually feeding their family, as hunters. It is a sport, not part of the food chain. I give you the 14 year olds. All they are doing is aiming and shooting, they have no interest beyond that.

Pretty much like some anglers, but I think there is far more likelihood that the angler will actually consume the fish they catch.

I find that extraordinary, particularly when the duck shooters could be getting money selling on the carcasses to butchers and restaurants.

I can't speak from experience because I'm not a fish, and I can't imagine the pain of having a huge hook pulled through my throat and then held up on a line to dangle, but there's no doubt it would be painful.

Because there are news articles during and after duck hunting season that say there are? The media used to spend more time covering this primitive sport - but now it barely rates a mention unless there's a human tragedy. The Shooters Party are beginning to have a huge influence on our state governments.

I know you'll use the same old response - what about farmed meat - that's so much worse. It is, but there's a purpose to it - food for the masses. What purpose does duck hunting serve apart from satisfying a bloodlust?

I assumed that the duck hunters were doing it for food. If they are not, then they are the same scum as "sport" fishermen.

But if the protests are simply about the method of killing, then this argument cannot be sustained. Just about every duck which dies a natural death in the wild would die a worse death than being shot.

Us kids had the joy of plucking them. YUK Mum cooked some of them but they tasted awful. Eventually, Dad got disinterested in duck shooting season. Died of cancer, age 56.
