The ALP cannot increase it neferti. A great many hoops must be jumped through before there can be any increase in the rate of GST.

I actually know someone who worked on the Legislation.

I like the GST. A goods tax, across the board of just 10% is much better than the Wholesale Tax on goods that was .... 33% for toothpaste and TVs. I love the fact that we can now buy a BIG TV (made wherever) for $1000 or less, rather than $5000. The price of Biscuits at Woollies or Coles is up to them, not the GST. :mrgreen:

The wholesale tax you cite was refered to as 'Sales Tax' and was 20% ... then rose to 21.5% (had an exeption for my business).
Import duty was 30%.
GST (10%) was applied to non essential food items ... like biscuits and take-away (exemptions are available for some businesses ... eg manufacturers)

GST is less per item, but covers a broader spectrum of goods.
